The 8th Annual Maine 2 Meter FM Simplex Challenge takes place this Sunday, April 15th, from 12pm – 4pm local time. The ham radio contest, which debuted in 2011, is designed to give 2 meter operators an opportunity to compete on an even basis, and have fun doing it. It has also served as an entry point for newly licensed hams to experience radiosport, or contesting, for the first time.
Contacts are limited to only the 2 meter band, and only FM modulation. Participants exchange their power level and the town, township, or city from which they are transmitting. Each QSO is worth one point. Participants may enter as either Fixed or Mobile, and use one of three power levels, including QRP, Medium, and High. The Medium power level has historically been the most popular, and the QRP and medium power classes have been the most competitive.
The overall winner has come from both the Fixed and Mobile categories in previous contests, with last year’s winner coming from the mobile ranks.
